Sonoma’s Grape Growers Speak Loud and Clear: 85.77% Vote to Keep Wine Commission Thriving

A Resounding Vote of Confidence

 

In a decisive move, Sonoma County wine grape growers have overwhelmingly approved the continuation of the Sonoma County Wine grape Commission (SCWC) for another five years. The California Department of Food and Agriculture certified the referendum, revealing that 85.77% of participating growers voted in favor of maintaining the Commission’s operations. 

 

A Legacy of Sustainability

 

Established in 2006, the SCWC has been instrumental in promoting sustainable practices within the region. Notably, in 2019, Sonoma County became the world’s first sustainable wine-growing region, with a remarkable 99% of its vineyards certified sustainable. This achievement underscores the growers’ commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability in agriculture. 

 

Growers’ Voices Amplified

 

The recent referendum marks the highest approval rate for the Commission since its inception. With 364 out of 1,298 eligible voters participating, 321 growers cast their votes in favor, reflecting a strong consensus within the community. This level of engagement highlights the growers’ trust in the Commission’s leadership, programs, and initiatives.

The SCWC is actively advancing the region’s wine-growing practices through initiatives like the “Farm of the Future,” which collaborates with global partners including Ford Pro, John Deere, and Agrology to implement climate-smart farming solutions. These projects aim to ensure Sonoma County remains at the forefront of agricultural innovation while addressing evolving environmental challenges.
